Horses' Haven - Rideable Horses

Due to the sensitive nature of rescue work, some of our horses are not listed on our website. Occasionally there are cases where photo ID will be requested in the beginning phases of adoption inquiries to ensure safe placement of our horses.

Please note that we are not a foster based rescue and all of our animals are housed onsite at our beautiful farm in Howell, MI.

BERRIE
Breed:  American Quarter Horse         Sex: Mare          Age: 4          Height: 14.3hh          Color: Dark Bay
Suitable for:  Experienced Horseperson/Trainer
Disciplines: Prospect for Any Discipline
Adoption Fee: $750

Update 12-11-24

Berrie is a beautiful young mare just loaded with potential! She has been with us a couple months, where she has been brought up to date on all of her medical and farrier needs. She has had some light ground work, and is working on her basic good horse citizen skills. She can be a very pushy, strong, and dominant type to work with thus far, and would benefit from an experienced handler working with a trainer.

She has had a full soundness exam, although she does have a mild case of lordosis (a sway in her back), she has been fully cleared to begin training for her riding career.

If interested in Berrie, please take the time to research or consult with your vet on this condition. We would also be happy to answer any questions that you may have!

CHICO
Breed:  Other          Sex: Gelding          Age: 18          Height: 14.1hh          Color: Chestnut
Suitable for:  Intermediate
Disciplines: Prospect for Any Discipline, Trail Riding
Adoption Fee: $1500

Chico has quickly become a farm favorite with his good looks and friendly personality! This blond haired beauty came to us from another ASPCA partner seeking more training opportunities for him. He was gelded earlier this year, and before that, enjoyed life as a stallion. This means Chico may never be able to be pastured with mares, and his introduction to geldings should be done slowly.

We suspect that Chico has had very little formal training, but so far he has been a willing participant! He enjoys attention, loves to be groomed and has excelled in our training program. He is a solid walk/trot mount, and has even offered an impressive canter when asked. Chico is more whoa than go and is always a consistent ride! He doesn't let much phase him, and is such a quick learner! He can be pushy to handle from the ground when distracted, but has improved with every training session. We will continue his training and can't wait to see what else this clever boy can do!

DESA (DEISE DELIGHT)
Breed:  Thoroughbred          Sex: Mare          Age: 8 (DOB 1/29/17)          Height: 16.2hh          Color: Bay
Suitable for:  Suitable for Intermediate Rider working trainer to finish her under saddle  / Advanced Rider
Disciplines: Prospect for Any Discipline, Hunter/Jumper, Dressage, Eventing, English Pleasure
Adoption Fee: $2500

Meet Desa (Deise Delight), the smart, sociable and talented Irish Thoroughbred. Desa is the perfect project horse, an OTTB who has had a let down period and restarted. Though she is green, she has unlimited potential and would excel in dressage or jumping, she is calm and confident and handles everything with grace. Desa is currently working walk and trot under saddle and developing canter. She is learning the basics of contact and flexion, as well as developing her free walk and stretching trot.

Desa has excellent ground manners, she single-ties, cross ties, is comfortable being stalled or outside, and is perfect for the vet and farrier. She has a lovely natural headset and is a talented mover with floaty gaits. Desa has the foundations to make an amazing horse with the right person. At this time, she would require an experienced rider or an intermediate rider working with a trainer.

JOY
Breed:  American Quarter Horse          Sex: Mare          Age: 21          Height: 14.1hh          Color: Grey
Suitable for:  Intermediate Rider
Disciplines: Prospect for Any Discipline, Trail Riding, English Pleasure, Western Pleasure
Adoption Fee: $750

Joy lives up to her name and has been a joy to have here at Horses Haven! She is a solid mare with excellent size and conformation! Although not very tall, she is perfectly suited to carry an average well balanced rider. We are still getting to know this girl undersaddle, but thus far, she has protested against arena riding!

We are told she has solo trail experience and a quick property ride out of the arena seemed to be much more to her liking. She is sensitive to cues, and also has ideas of her own. With all of this said, she is not for a beginner and would do best with a confident teen or experienced amateur working with a trainer. Please reach out if you would like to meet Joy!

KUSAMA
Breed:  Grade          Sex: Mare          Age: 9          Height: 14.2hh          Color: Black Pinto
Suitable for:  Experienced Horseperson/Trainer
Disciplines: Gaited, Prospect for Any Discipline, Trail Riding
Adoption Fee: $1000

Kusama is a sweet and kind mare. She is shy and cautious but very eager to learn. She came from one of our partner rescues down south. In her earlier years, she was a feral horse and part of a free roaming herd. She will be a fun project for someone looking for a challenge as a training project.

She has had many hours of ground work but would do best in a calmer setting and daily one on one attention. She will continue light training while she is here but she is hoping to meet her perfect match to help her succeed.

Kusama is not broke to ride yet, but enjoys grooming and attention. She is up to date on her vet/dental and farrier care.

If you think you might be a good match for Kusama's future, please fill out an adoption application!

*She needs a handler/trainer experienced with flighty and nervous horses*

MILES
Breed:  Standardbred          Sex: Gelding          Age: 4          Height: 15.0hh          Color: Black
Suitable for:  Experienced Horseperson/Trainer
Disciplines: Prospect for Flatwork, Trail Riding
Adoption Fee: $750

Miles is a sweet and playful young Standardbred gelding. He has been very sensible when introduced to new things, and would thrive under a consistent training program. He has the best personality and loves to learn.

Miles has conformation in both hind limbs best suited for VERY light flat work and light trail riding. With those details in mind, it will be very important that his adopter has a great and close relationship with their vet and farrier to insure this boy develops the best he can. He has benefited from ground work and pole exercises used to strengthen his hind end. Miles is sound and moves so beautifully, but we don't believe a heavy riding career would be in his best interest.

Miles has started some light training. He enjoys being groomed, picks up all four feet, and is a gentleman to handle. He has learned how to lunge and wear tack. He has had his few rides and was absolutely perfect. His adopter will need to have experience training young horses or have the resources and consistent help in order to help his training be successful!

He currently lives in a herd of geldings. He was gelded in early 2024, so he should be introduced to mares slowly and with caution.

RENATA
Breed: Grade          Sex: Mare          Age: 8          Height: 14.3hh          Color: Chestnut
Suitable for: Advanced/Trainer
Disciplines: Gaited
Adoption Fee: $1500

Renata is a stunning and flashy chestnut mare looking for an advanced and experienced adopter to help her be the best horse she can be. She came to Horses' Haven from one of our partner rescues down south, where she started life as a feral horse.  She has come so far and has been lightly started under saddle. She is very kind and sweet, but can be "snorty" and alert.

Renata does appear to be gaited, and she is up to date on all of her medical/farrier/dental care. All that is left is for her to start her next chapter!

SULLY
Breed: Grade          Sex: Gelding          Age: 6          Height: 13.3hh          Color: Chestnut
Suitable for: Experienced Trainer
Disciplines: Prospect for Any Discipline, Sully is not yet under saddle
Adoption Fee: $1200

Sully is seeking a soul mate, someone kind, confident, and patient who will take the time to help him develop into a confident equine citizen.

He has a stocky build, of indeterminate breed and has not shown to be gaited. Less than a year ago, Sully was a feral stallion rounded up from the strip mine herds in Kentucky. No longer feral, he still lacks confidence, and is typically the bottom of the herd of geldings he's pastured with. He hasn't displayed any stud-like behavior or interest in nearby mares. He can be stalled or live outside 24/7 with shelter.

He can be very fearful at times, and can freeze/bolt unexpectedly, but at the same time, is also willing to trust his handler in all kinds of new situations, including obstacle courses- he just may momentarily freak out. He does best when his handlers carries on as if nothing has happened.

He lunges, ties, and accepts tack, is comfortable with the mounting block, but we are continuing to build confidence on the ground before starting under saddle work. He needs continued work with the farrier, and may need sedation to start.

He has a quality about him that draws you in, and makes you stay just a bit longer for a few extra scratches. He would thrive in a one on one relationship with a partner.

Sully will need someone experienced with fearful horses, calm and confident themselves, and willing to take the time it takes to develop this kind and sweet gelding!

THORIN
Breed:  Cob/Grade          Sex: Gelding          Age: 10          Height: 13-13.1hh          Color: Black
Suitable for:  Advanced handler with experience training horses
Disciplines: Prospect for Any Discipline, Trail Riding
Adoption Fee: $2000

Update 1/2/2025

Thorin has been progressing in his training at a rapid rate! He has made so much progress in just the past few months that we wanted to share some updates!

- He is now routinely standing for the farrier without sedation to have his feet trimmed.

- He is developing a nice canter on the lunge line.

- He is learning the beginning stages of collection and flexion, as well as developing his free walk and stretchy trot.

- He has started learning to jump and has done small cross rails.

- He has made great steps in overcoming his fear of lunge whips, sticks, or anything of the sort.

- He stands quietly in-hand, single tied, or cross tied, and is very comfortable being stalled.

- He has accepted a multitude of riders, including giving pony rides to beginners, and has been kid tested by a confident tween.

- He is routinely worked with other horses, including mares, geldings, ponies, draft horses, and minis, and has always been a perfect gentleman. He gets along with everyone so well that he is often used as an emotional support/confidence horse for other nervous horses.

- Though he was initially wary, he is improving for the vets and recently completed a soundness exam and had farrier films done, though he still is not a fan of needles (can you blame him?)

- He has mostly overcome his fear response of bolting away from scary situations and now looks to his handler for reassurance when he is feeling nervous.

Thorin is in a full training program and is coming up to the barn multiple times a week for training, either in hand or under saddle.   He is getting braver and more confident each day and is sharing more of his charming personality - he tends to steal the hearts of our volunteers. Thorin is ready for adoption and is eagerly waiting to meet his people.

October 2024:

Do you need a few more minutes to go back and look at his pictures again?  To take another look at that gorgeous face, his dreamy mane, his perfect little cob body? Go ahead, I’ll wait.

Did you see the one of him giving a lead line ride to a beginner? The one of him standing so nonchalantly in the trailer? What about the one of him leaping through the air? Do you want to give that perfect little nose a kiss too? What those pictures don’t show, is how he’s gotten to where he is now. We don’t know a lot of his history, but we know it some of it was sad and scary. The pictures of his beautiful face without a halter? At first he was uncatchable, untouchable… interested, curious… but ready to bolt at the slightest moment. They pictures don’t show the small team that has worked with him for months, progressing slowly and steadily. Teaching life skills from the ground up (farrier) and starting under saddle. After months of requiring sedation, our patient farrier was able to trim his feet without it  (though he may require sedation at first in a new environment) With patience, he’s become so much better for the veterinarian as well.

Until recently- only the rider that started him under saddle had ridden him, and then in the space of a few days, he accepted 3 different riders like it was no big deal. He has a lovely walk and trot, but needs to build balance and strength before adding the canter. With his confident rider, he struts the trails and obstacles around the farm with only an occasional look. He trots and canters cavallettis on a lunge line, and under saddle they’ve been schooling intro level dressage tests.

The rider in the videos in 5’8",  he takes up a lot of leg, and he strong enough to carry small adults, **however**  there is one big BUT here (and it’s not just his) Thorin has a very short and wide back, and saddle fitting will be a challenge, one his adopter must be prepared to address as he does not like to be ridden bareback. We’ve been riding him in a soft treeless, but that’s not a long-term solution.

He has the *potential*  to be a great kids horse, he’s curious, sweet and has done great with lead line rides… BUT he’s not there yet… he's not *yet* your kids first pony, or safe for kids to work independently, and he’s not yet ready for a beginner handler. With time we believe he will be all of these things. Thorin is a 10 year old gelding that doesn’t have a mean or naughty bone in his body, but he still has a few fearful ones. His height is 13-13.1hh… approximate  because sticks of all kinds are still scary… there are still many things that he will suddenly find fearful and want to leave the situation… FAST.

Thorin’s ideal adopter will have experience finishing horses,  and be willing to put in the time to build a relationship. If you’re willing to put in the time to complete the transformation we’ve started, I promise you, this is the horse of a lifetime.

TITAN
Breed: Thoroughbred          Sex: Gelding          Age: 12          Height: 16.2hh          Color: Dark Bay
Suitable for: Experienced Handler
Disciplines: Dressage, English Pleasure, Trail Riding
Adoption Fee: $1500

Meet Titan, Mr. tall dark & handsome! He has a loving personality, and is very social, eye-catching guy with fancy, floaty gaits. He would excel as a lower-level dressage horse in a flatwork only home, due to prior healed injuries. Under saddle, he learning the basics of collection and flexion, and building a lovely free walk and stretchy trot. His natural movement is floaty with impulsion, and he is working on developing a balanced canter. He is a fun and confident dude under saddle, and takes care of his rider. He stands well tied and cross tied, as well as for the vet and farrier.

Titan has a big personality, and can be known to bolt in stressful situations, so he would require an advanced handler. He also requires light maintenance and front shoes. Titan’s ideal adopter would be a rider that enjoys riding in good weather, and chooses to pass on windy, or frigid days! He is truly a fantastic horse with a loving personality who is ready to find his forever home!

WILLIAM
Breed: Arabian/Dutch Harness Horse          Sex: Gelding          Age: 16          Height: 15.0hh          Color: Bay
Suitable for: Advanced/Trainer
Disciplines: Trail Riding, Other, Dressage, Endurance, Western Pleasure, Prospect for Any Discipline, English Pleasure
Adoption Fee: $2000

Are you looking for the total package, looks, personality and fancy movement? A trail partner who will take a confident rider over any obstacle? The sweetest horse you’ve ever met? Well William is your guy. We truly can’t say enough good things about William, he has the most lovable and expressive personality and is always the first to greet you at the gate.

William came to us underweight and improperly muscled, scoping revealed severe ulcers. He has successfully completed treatment but going forward, will need simple management to prevent reoccurrence, particularly 24/7 hay or forage access.

William is currently working through a rehabilitation program and is gaining weight & proper muscle through groundwork, stretches, and massage. At this time his ideal adopter would have experience rehabbing horses with “upside down” muscling. William can be pastured with mares & geldings, live outside 24/7 or be stalled, but does best living in a herd as he can become buddy sour if he only has one friend.

William would love to be a trail horse, companion or perhaps explore dressage. He is excelling in his training and had recently restarted light riding work and is learning stretching and collection, as well as developing his free walk. He does great with poles and obstacles, including tarps, tunnels, bridges, and logs. He is a proven trail horse and does great with a group, but can be nervous solo.

William stands calmly in hand, single tied, or cross tied. He is a gentleman for the vet and farrier. William is truly a fantastic horse, and would love to find a riding partner who is willing to work him through the remainder of his rehab. William really loves bonding with his people and pays attention to their cues, so he does best with a calm confident handler. He has a bit of a chicken little personality- if his handler thinks the sky is falling, he will too!  But if you are calm and carry on, so does he.

At this time, he would require an experienced handler who is patient and kind and able to complete his training. William absolutely loves people and is eagerly waiting to meet you!
